2025 Gregorian New Year Holiday

The Gregorian New Year, also known as Western New Year, marks the first day of the new year according to the Gregorian calendar. It is widely celebrated around the world, especially in Western countries.

So, how many days off are there for the 2025 Gregorian New Year? According to Article 112, Clause 1, Point (a) of the 2019 Labor Code, employees are entitled to a one-day holiday with full pay. Since January 1, 2025, falls on a Wednesday, employees will have one day off without additional compensatory leave unless specified otherwise by company agreement.

2025 Lunar New Year Holiday

The Lunar New Year, or Tet, is the most significant traditional holiday in Vietnamese culture, marking the transition from the old year to the new. The 2019 Labor Code specifies the following regarding the Tet holiday:

Article 112. Public Holidays and Tet

Employees are entitled to time off with full pay for the following public holidays:

(b) Lunar New Year: 5 days

This 5-day holiday spans the following days:

  • Monday, January 27, 2025 (December 28, Year of the Dragon)
  • Tuesday, January 28, 2025 (December 29, Year of the Dragon)
  • Wednesday, January 29, 2025 (January 1, Year of the Snake)
  • Thursday, January 30, 2025 (January 2, Year of the Snake)
  • Friday, January 31, 2025 (January 3, Year of the Snake)

If a business does not operate on Saturdays and Sundays, the holiday may extend to 9 days from January 25, 2025, to February 2, 2025, because the official 5-day holiday is bookended by weekends.

Lunar New Year Holiday for Public Employees

According to the Ministry of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs, the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday for public employees is extended to 9 days, from January 25 to February 2, 2025 (December 26, Year of the Dragon to January 5, Year of the Snake).

Lunar New Year Holiday for Students

Students are entitled to one day off for Gregorian New Year and five days for Lunar New Year per the Labor Code. However, the specific duration may vary depending on local educational policies.

How is salary calculated for employees who go to work on Tet?

Wage Calculations for Working on Tet As per Article 98, Clause 1, Point (c) of the 2019 Labor Code regarding overtime pay:

Employees working on public holidays, Tet, or paid leave days are entitled to at least 300% of their normal wage, in addition to their regular holiday pay. Thus, employees working during Tet 2025 will earn at least 400% of their standard daily wage.
